The Institute carries out its mission by providing workshops and short courses on environmental chemistry and laboratory safety in developing countries and by helping to host scientists from developing countries in laboratories throughout the United States, Canada, and other countries who are willing to help.
Instructors are provided with grants so that they can share their expertise, knowledge, and experience with scientists. Grants are provided to experienced scientists who can provide training in:
environmental topics which include:
- Fundamentals of environmental sampling and analysis,
- Project planning (monitoring and project plans, etc.),
- Advanced environmental sampling (water, air, soil, tissues),
- Advanced environmental analysis (pesticides, chlorinated dioxins, metals, oil, etc.),
- Green (environmentally friendly) analytical methodology,
- Green chemistry that helps minimize environmental pollution,
- Green chemistry experiments for college labs,
- Environmental methods verification and validation,
- Performance-based environmental methods,
- Selecting the best methods for specific project needs,
- Quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC),
- Counter-terrorism environmental methods,
- New analytical sensors, techniques, and methods,
- Analytical reference materials,
- Environmental lab accreditation,
- Environmental lab audits,
- Microbiological and toxicological lab audits,
- Waste management & treatment (including medical waste)
- Statistical applications and evaluations, and
- Interpreting and presenting environmental data.
and safety topics which include:
- Fundamentals of industrial hygiene and laboratory safety,
- Organization and implementation of a laboratory safety program,
- Facility/Laboratory design considerations,
- Laboratory ventilation and hoods,
- Chemical toxicology,
- Handling highly toxic chemicals (e.g., carcinogens, reproductive hazards),
- Chemical transportation and storage,
- Personal protective equipment (PPE),
- Handling cryogenics and compressed gases,
- Fire prevention and protection,
- Emergency procedures,
- Chemical waste handling and disposal,
- Medical (health care) waste handling and disposal,
- Biohazards and controls, and
- Radiation hazards and controls.
Grants cover all travel costs as well as any necessary translation of handout materials to the language of the developing country. In addition, an honorarium is provided to instructors.
Grants do not cover costs for preparation of original instruction materials. Instructors are expected to be experienced professionals who already have basic course materials prepared (including PowerPoint presentations).
If you are interested in applying to help with education and training - or - if you can help to host scientists from developing countries in your laboratory, please fill out a short e-mail form below. We'll contact you promptly and work with you as the Institute obtains funding for you and/or your organization or laboratory.
